Visitors decide fast whether to stay on your website or leave. If they cannot tell what you do and how to reach you in about 5 seconds, many hit the back button and call a competitor.
The 5-second test is a simple way to see your site through a stranger’s eyes. Run it today. It takes 10 minutes.
How to run the test
- Find someone who does not know your business well. A friend, a neighbor, or a family member works.
- Open your homepage on a phone. Most of your visitors use phones.
- Let them look for 5 seconds. Then hide the screen.
- Ask them the 5 questions below.
- Write down their exact answers.
Repeat with 2 or 3 people. Patterns show up fast.
The 5 questions
- What does this business do?
- Who is it for?
- Where does it work? (city or service area)
- What should you do next? (call, book, buy, request a quote)
- Why should you pick this business?
If they struggle with any answer, your homepage needs work in that area.
Scorecard
Give yourself 1 point for each clear, correct answer.
- 5 points: Strong first impression. Focus on speed and SEO.
- 3 to 4 points: Good start. Fix the weak answers first.
- 0 to 2 points: Your homepage is costing you leads. Fix the top section before you spend more on ads or SEO.
Common fixes
They could not tell what you do:
- Replace a vague headline like “Welcome” or “Excellence in Every Detail” with a clear one: “Family Dentist in San Clemente” or “Solar Panel Cleaning in Bakersfield”
They did not know where you work:
- Add your city or service area to the headline or right below it
They did not know what to do next:
- Add one clear button at the top, such as “Call Now,” “Book a Consultation,” or “Get a Free Quote”
- Show your phone number at the top of every page, tappable on phones
They did not know why to pick you:
- Add 3 short trust points: years in business, star rating, guarantees, certifications
- Show a real review near the top
