Google Business Profile: The Complete Setup and Optimization Guide
Your Google Business Profile is the box that shows your business on Google Maps and in local search. For many local businesses, it brings in more calls than the website. It is free, and most profiles are half finished.
Use this guide to set yours up the right way and keep it working.
Step 1: Claim and verify your profile
Search your business name on Google. If a profile exists, click “Own this business?” and follow the steps. If none exists, create one at business.google.com.
Google verifies you by video, phone, text, or email, depending on your business. Do not skip this. An unverified profile does not rank well and you cannot reply to reviews.
Step 2: Get your name, address, and phone right
- Business name: Use your real business name only. Do not add keywords like “Best Dentist Orange County.” Google treats keyword stuffing as a guideline violation and it is a common cause of suspensions.
- Address: If customers visit you, show your address. If you travel to customers, hide your address and set a service area.
- Phone: Use a local number that matches your website and other listings.
Keep your name, address, and phone exactly the same everywhere online. Small differences confuse Google and AI tools.
Step 3: Pick the right categories
Your primary category matters more than almost anything else on the profile. Pick the most specific one that matches your main service. Then add secondary categories for other services you offer.
Look at the top three businesses in your Map Pack. Their categories show you what Google rewards in your market.
Step 4: Fill out every section
- Services: List each service with a short description.
- Products: Add packages or popular services with prices if you publish them.
- Description: Write 2 to 3 short paragraphs on who you serve, what you do, and where.
- Hours: Keep them current, including holidays.
- Website link: Point to your homepage or the best matching service page.
- Booking link: Add it if you take online bookings.
Step 5: Add real photos
Upload photos of your team, your work, your location, and your vehicles. Real photos build trust. Add new photos every month, so the profile stays fresh.
Step 6: Post every week
Google Posts show on your profile. Share offers, recent projects, tips, and events. Each post should include a photo and a button such as “Call” or “Book.”
Our plans include 4 to 16 profile posts per month, depending on the plan. See local SEO pricing.
Step 7: Get reviews and reply to all of them
Reviews drive rankings and calls. Ask every happy customer, ideally right after the job. Send a direct review link by text or email.
Reply to every review, good or bad. Thank happy customers by name. For a bad review, stay calm, take it offline, and show future customers you care.
Step 8: Track what the profile brings in
Your profile shows calls, website clicks, and direction requests. Check these each month. Add a tracking link (a UTM link) to your website button, so you see profile visits in Google Analytics.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Keywords in the business name
- A P.O. box or virtual office as your address
- Two profiles for the same location
- Ignoring reviews for weeks
- Changing your name or address often
