Your customers no longer search only on Google. They ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews questions like “Who is the best dentist in San Clemente?” or “Which plumber in Dana Point has good reviews?” The AI gives a short answer with a few business names. If yours is not one of them, that customer never sees you.
This page explains how AI search works for local businesses and what to do about it.
How AI search is different from Google search
Google search shows a list of links and a map. The customer compares and picks. AI search gives one answer, often with 2 to 5 names. Fewer spots means more competition for each one.
AI tools build that answer from sources they trust. For local businesses, that usually means:
- Your website
- Your Google Business Profile and reviews
- Review sites like Yelp and industry directories
- Community sites like Reddit and Nextdoor
- Local news, blogs, and “best of” lists
Why some businesses get recommended and others do not
AI tools favor businesses that are easy to understand and easy to verify. Three things matter most:
- Clarity. Your website says exactly what you do, who you serve, and where.
- Consistency. Your name, address, phone, and services match everywhere online.
- Third-party proof. Other trusted sites mention you, review you, and link to you.
Your 7-step AI search action plan
- Check where you stand. Ask 6 customer-style questions in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Count how many name you. Use our guide: how to check what ChatGPT says about your business.
- Fix your Google Business Profile. Complete every section, pick the right categories, and post weekly. See the Google Business Profile guide.
- Clean up your listings. Match your name, address, and phone on Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing Places, and industry directories.
- Build clear service and city pages. One page per service and per main city, with plain-language answers to common questions.
- Add FAQ sections. Use the customer’s question as the heading and a short, direct answer below it.
- Earn mentions. Ask to be included in local “best of” lists, chamber directories, and industry roundups. Join relevant community conversations.
- Collect detailed reviews. Ask customers to mention the service and city in their review.
What not to do
- Do not stuff pages with keywords for AI tools. Write for people.
- Do not buy fake reviews. It violates Google and FTC rules.
- Do not rely on one source. AI tools compare many.
How to measure progress
Track the same questions every month. Watch how often your business gets named and which sources the AI cites. Combine that with your calls and form fills, so you see the full picture.
