Shopify SEO: How E-commerce Stores Get Found on Google and AI Shopping

, ,

Shopify gives you a solid start, but a theme alone does not rank your store. Shoppers find products through Google, Google Shopping, and more often through AI tools like ChatGPT that now recommend products. Here is how to make your store easy to find and easy to buy from.

Write product pages for people, not just search engines

Many stores paste the manufacturer description. Thousands of other stores use the same text. Write your own:

  • A clear product title with the main search term, such as “Personalized Leather Dog Collar, Handmade”
  • What it is, who it is for, and why it is different
  • Size, material, care, and shipping details
  • Real photos from several angles, with descriptive alt text
  • Reviews on the product page
  • FAQs, such as “Does it fit large breeds?”

Make collections pages work harder

Collection pages often rank better than single products. Add a short intro paragraph at the top of each collection with the main keyword and helpful buying tips.

Fix technical basics

  • Speed: Remove apps you no longer use. Each app adds code. Compress images.
  • Duplicate URLs: Shopify creates product URLs inside collections. Make sure internal links point to the main product URL.
  • Structured data: Confirm your theme outputs product schema with price, availability, and reviews. Test with Google’s Rich Results Test.
  • Google Merchant Center: Connect it through the Google and YouTube app to show free product listings.

Accessibility matters for online stores

E-commerce sites are frequent targets of ADA website lawsuits. Common issues on Shopify themes:

  • Missing alt text on product images
  • Low color contrast on buttons and sale prices
  • Menus and carts that do not work with a keyboard
  • Pop-ups that trap screen reader users

We fix these with code, not overlay widgets. Read our ADA and WCAG 2.2 guide.

Get recommended by AI shopping tools

AI tools pull product recommendations from reviews, comparison articles, Reddit threads, and your own product data. To show up:

  • Keep product data complete and accurate in Merchant Center
  • Collect reviews on your site and on third-party sites
  • Get featured in gift guides and “best of” lists
  • Answer common questions in plain language on product and FAQ pages

Content that brings shoppers in

Write buying guides and gift guides tied to your products, such as “How to Choose a Monogram Style for Wedding Gifts.” Link each guide to the products it mentions.
